News about Golden Mile Complex (GMC) sold end-block for S$700 million to a consortium (Channel New Asia). Before the Complex's scheduled close to the public, a friend recommended a tour, sparking my interest to delve deeper. I began researching its conserved status and sensitive restoration.
With a price tag of more than a billion dollars in investment, the consortium must have perceived promising advantages for prospective residents. It may be the location, view and critical features. As the day approaches, I eagerly prepare my camera to explore based on these three key points.

It is a poignant reminder to explore
Golden Mile's final days.
Upon arrival at GMC, we were supposed to meet our tour guide at one of the units. As we strolled through, it became evident why the term "Little Thailand" was coined and popularised by journalists (Straits Time). Gives its predominantly Thai shop owners, restaurants and cafes serving Thai cuisine. We continued our search at the upper levels; we wondered if we had the correct address, as all we could see were rows of massage parlours on both sides. Eventually, we found the unit we were looking for, only to discover it was a mission outreach—quite surprising!
Are they trying to reach out to
their fellow countrymen?
The tour guide explained that the venue was to allow us to meet some residents and staff residing or working at GMC to share their experiences.
I'm glad he made this arrangement. The sharing was an eye-opening experience to witness the transformation of GMC into a vibrant "Little Thailand" in recent years! And we were treated with Thai delight; it was delicious. THANK YOU!

Back to the topic, as mentioned, focus on three points: location, view and critical features. Our exploration begins from level nine upwards, facing North. Have a clear picture of the neighbourhoods and a partial cityscape on the left. As we ascend to level fifteen, things become more inviting, especially with the captivating Circular Shape window along the corridor. Its architectural design intentionally sparks curiosity, as we couldn't resist peering through it. Surprisingly, the view from below the building facade of the window never felt this way.
We continued exploring and moved to the other building facing South. We could view the Kallang River and the National Stadium on the left, the Indoor Stadium, and condos across Tanjong Rhu. The River flows towards Marina Barrage, extending to Gardens by the Bay and Marina Bay Sands. It's breathtaking; some might call it a "million dollars view." The Golden Mile Complex centres on its unique architectural design, though it was misused for its intended function. It remains a landmark with a rich history and cultural significance.
I'd love to hear about your experience at Golden Mile Complex. Will you consider purchasing a unit during the redevelopment?
Here is my vivid memory. My family occasionally travel in the evenings to catch the coach bound for Genting Highland. The place served as a makeshift transportation hub for travellers to and from Malaysia and Thailand. Another memorable part was the Golden Mile Theatre, a separate yet essential entity that added to the immersive experience.
The word "Golden Mile" holds deep significance for all army personnel. Just across from Golden Mile Complex lies the Golden Mile Food Centre, a sanctuary of culinary delights with a broader enticement. Ascending to the second level and beyond reveals a hidden gem—a vibrant marketplace offering military clothing and accessories, faithfully serving the military community's needs to this day. It is a trove, a testament to the enduring spirit of those who do.
During a serendipitous, I met a client, Dong Fang Billy (董芳比利), at a residence at GMC. It happened to be the home of Zhao Jing as well. So coincidentally, I have the privilege of capturing the personal profiles of Zhao Jing, Hua Liang (兆锦,华亮), Jack Neo and Moses Lim, renowned comedians who left an indelible mark on the 90s comedy scene. Billy is a talented Taiwanese singer and a fascinating individual who transitioned to a captivating radio station DJ, notably at the former Love 972. I was honoured with the opportunity to design and photograph him for his new albums, making this encounter a cherished memory.
Opposite the Golden Mile Complex is the Golden Mile Food Centre. Holds a profound significance, especially for army personnel. It is a sanctuary of culinary delights, but the allure of this place goes beyond gastronomic pleasures. As you delve further into this place, ascending to the second level and beyond, you'll uncover a hidden gem—the vibrant marketplace with military clothing and accessories faithfully catering to the needs of the military community, even to this day. It is a trove, a testament to the enduring spirit of those who serve.
Whenever the name "Golden Mile" is mentioned, it evokes cherished and unique memories.
